Andrew Douglas

 Andrew Jackson Douglas, 91, formerly of Philippi, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026.

He was born June 24, 1935, in Philippi, West Virginia, to the late Glen G. Douglas and Ruth Lee Douglas. He was preceded in death by his siblings and his beloved wife, Cuba Jean Bell Douglas.

A proud American, Andy served his country in the United States Army from 1952 to 1955 as a member of the 780th Field Artillery Battalion. He was wounded in North Korea during the Korean War and was later awarded the Purple Heart. His love for his country remained a defining part of his life.

Following his military service, Andy built a successful career in the insurance business. He worked for Equitable Life Insurance before following his entrepreneurial spirit and founding Douglas Insurance Services, Inc. in May 1981. Through his work, he developed lasting relationships with countless people throughout the community.

Andy was never one to sit still for long. He enjoyed tending to his farm and garden in Philippi and took great pride in the land and the simple pleasures of working with his hand and sharing his harvest. He also loved NASCAR. During retirement, he enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad, collecting stories and memories wherever he went.

He was also known for something that meant a great deal to him—his American flags. Andy donated and personally put up countless flags for local churches, friends, and organizations. For him, the flag was more than a symbol; it represented the country he loved and the people he was proud to serve.

Andy was generous to a fault, fun-loving, witty, and always ready with a good story. His cheerful nature and quick sense of humor made him a welcome presence wherever he went. He had a remarkable ability to make friends, and those friendships became an important part of his life.

Andy believed in community and gave his time and energy to several organizations throughout his life. He was a member of Elk City Church in Elk City, West Virginia; a 50-year member of Yate’s Lodge #163 in Flemington, West Virginia; a member of Osiris Shriners; a member of the American Legion Post 29 in Elkins, West Virginia to name a few.

He leaves to cherish his memory his nephew, Phillip Ammar of Twenty Nine Palms, California, along with the many friends who were like family to him. Though his surviving family may be small, the circle of people who loved Andy was anything but. He touched countless lives through his generosity, his friendship, his service, and his stories. Andy loved God and his country. Andy loved people.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Friends will gather to celebrate Andy’s life on Thursday, September 3rd, 2026 at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the service, officiated by Pastor George Webb, will begin at 2:00 p.m. The burial will follow at Morningside Cemetery in Renick, West Virginia.
