Barbara was deeply admired for the lasting impact she made on every community she was a part of. As her passion for education grew, she pursued a career in teaching and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Concord College. After graduating, she began her teaching career as a Physical Education teacher in Rupert, West Virginia. From the very beginning of her career, Barbara dedicated herself not only to educating her students, but also to encouraging their confidence, character, and personal growth. Those who knew her described her as kind, fair, elegant, and an advocate for children. She had a gift for making students feel seen, valued, and capable of success.
Barbara later earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University. After moving to Michigan, she devoted 25 years of service to Wyandotte Public Schools, where she taught Physical Education from 1967 until her retirement in 1992.
Barbara’s journey to Michigan began through her relationship with Larry Jones. As proud West Virginia natives, Barbara and Larry began to build a life together in the mountains of West Virginia, but later relocated to Lincoln Park, Michigan in the mid 1960s in pursuit of new opportunities. On July 3, 1967, they were united in marriage and shared many cherished years together.
Whether in Michigan or West Virginia, Barbara was known for the beauty and care she poured into her gardens. Gardening was one of her greatest passions, and she earned certification in Professional Gardening along with numerous recognitions for her work over the years. She was admired for the beauty she created and shared throughout her community.
Barbara’s faith was one of the strongest pillars in her life. Her devotion to God and commitment to her church community remained unwavering throughout her years in West Virginia. As a member of Orient Hill Baptist Church, she faithfully served others and continued to make a meaningful impact through her kindness, generosity, and servant’s heart.
Later in life, Barbara found companionship and joy with Hank Copen. Together they shared a love for movie dates, the outdoors, laughter, and their devotion to the Lord. Barbara admired Hank’s gentle spirit and quiet confidence. Their relationship was built on love, faith, support, and meaningful friendship.
Above all else, Barbara treasured her loved ones. As a mother, a grandmother, an aunt, and a cherished neighbor, she found joy in celebrating others. Barbara traveled near and far to be able to witness and celebrate the many accomplishments of her family. She is survived by her son, Larry Jones II; her daughter, Jennifer Jones-Zaia; her son-in-law, Michael Zaia; and her grandchildren, Vincenza Zaia and Martino Zaia; and all of her beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
