Luther Toney

Luther Eugene Toney, born December 5, 1940, in West Virginia, passed away on September 7, 2026, at Hubbard House in Charleston, West Virginia, surrounded by his family.

Luther was the son of the late Luther Toney and Mamie Toney-Skaggs. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Toney, who passed away on December 12, 2001.

Patricia was a cherished wife, mother, and beloved member of her family. Her life was deeply connected with Luther’s, and together they built a family and shared many years of love, devotion, and memories. Though Patricia passed away before Luther, her presence remained an important part of his life and the lives of all who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for the love she gave her family and for the lasting place she holds in their hearts.

Throughout their lives together, Luther and Patricia opened their hearts and home to many children. In addition to raising their own family, they adopted and provided care, love, guidance, and support to numerous children over the years. Their willingness to welcome children into their lives reflected their generous spirits and deep commitment to helping others. The love and care they gave made a lasting difference in the lives of the children they nurtured.

Throughout his life, Luther was known for his humility, kindness, and selfless nature. He never sought recognition for himself, choosing instead to quietly help others and give of his time, strength, and heart whenever he was needed. His gentle spirit, generous nature, and unwavering concern for his family and those around him left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Luther lived with quiet dignity and treated others with compassion, respect, and warmth.

Luther proudly devoted more than two decades of his life to serving his country in the United States Air Force. He entered active duty on September 6, 1960, and retired honorably on September 30, 1981, after more than 21 years of service, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. During his distinguished military career, Luther served as a Materiel Facilities Supervisor and completed approximately six years of foreign service.

His military honors included the Air Force Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. His years of service reflected the same qualities he carried throughout his life: duty, dedication, humility, and a selfless commitment to others.

Luther was the father of Luther E. Toney II, Ray W. Toney, Shanda M. Toney, Clarence E. Toney, Shane D. Toney, Christopher A. Carte, and the late Devin Toney, Karen Dempsey, Glenda Walters. He leaves behind a family who will carry forward his memory, his stories, and the legacy of a humble, kind, and selfless man whose love was shown not only in words, but in the countless ways he cared for and supported those around him. His legacy also lives on in the many children he and Patricia adopted, welcomed, and cared for throughout their lives.

A memorial service honoring the lives of Luther and Patricia Toney will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. the Chapel of Rest Mausoleum at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Victor, West Virginia with Pastor David Minturn officiating . Military Rites to be conducted by the U.S. Air Force. Burial will follow immediately after the service.

Alhough Luther and Patricia were separated in death for many years, they will now be laid to rest together, reunited in peace. Their lives, their love, and the family they created will remain a lasting testament to the bond they shared.
