Helen Genelee Blake Scott, 92, died peacefully at CAMC Memorial Hospital on August 7, 2026, after a short illness.
Born on September 6, 1933, at her home in Corliss, WV, Helen was the eldest daughter of Clarence and Lure McClung Blake of Corliss. She was a child of the Great Depression and learned to be mindful of resources, a trait she carried her entire life. She was a graduate of Nuttall High School in Lookout, WV. Helen met her husband, Tom, in the 1950s in Cleveland, Ohio, where she had gone to find work with her sister, Irene. Helen and Tom married in 1959 and had four children. Leaving Cleveland, they made their home in Greenville, SC for several years, then returned to the Mountain State. After raising her children, Helen returned to school and became a nurse, a longtime goal of hers. She worked at Fayette Continuous Care in Fayetteville, WV for a number of years.
Helen was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Mount Lookout, WV. She enjoyed studying the scriptures. She was very talented at canning fruits and vegetables. Her children especially loved her raspberry jam. Helen was also an excellent cook. She loved tending to her flowers and houseplants. When anyone had a project going, Helen was right by their side, helping however she could. She definitely had a gift with a needle; not only could she sew and mend quite handily, but her needlepoint was beautiful and flawless.
Helen was preceded in death by husband, Thomas Lee Scott; daughter, Lurene Annette Scott Ellyson; son, Thomas Brant Scott; parents, Clarence and Lure Blake; brother, James Blake; sister, Irene Stark; and sister, Florence Wood.
Helen is survived by daughter, Karen Knopp (Greg) of Wallback, WV; son, Bill Scott (Lori) of Summersville, WV; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Scott of Columbus, Ohio. She is survived by grandchildren: Annetta Ellyson, Jay Ellyson (Nikki), Derek Knopp (Katie), Logan Knopp, Aden Knopp, Ana Knopp, Katie King (Brandon), Abby Scott, and Alex Scott.
