Gay (Elmore) Stover, formerly of Smoot, daughter of late the Delton Elmore and Rosie Young, passed away in an assisted living home in Aiken, SC on Wednesday March 11, 2026.
Gay is proceeded in death by her husband Tracy Stover; her brothers Dalton Elmore, Henry Elmore, John Elmore, and Jimmy Lee Elmore; her sister JoAnn Kenny; and several beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws.
Gay is survived by her only son, Dr. Tracy Stover Jr., his wife Maria, and three grandchildren – Preston, Henry, and Lilia, of Aiken, SC. She is also survived by her sisters Brenda Elmore of Ronceverte, Rosemary Smith of Culloden, and Louise Cavallaro of Rupert, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
Gay was born Nov. 3, 1947 in Quinwood to a poor coal mining family. She graduated from Crichton High School in 1966 and worked several years at Williams Convenience Store in Charmco. From 1974 to 1983 she owned and operated Gay’s Grocery in Quinwood which became as much a community meeting place as a market. In 1978, she came to know the Lord. She served as youth minister and assistant pastor at churches in Charmco and Hines and cohosted a Christian AM radio show with late Rev. Lemon Dorsey until 1983. In September 1989, she became pastor of Crawley Baptist Church, serving faithfully in that role until her retirement in December 2015, leading many souls to Christ.
Gay lived her life in western Greenbrier County apart from her final years in Aiken, SC where she moved to be with her son and grandchildren. She loved God above all, poured her life into her family, and served her community. She brought love and light to everyone she met all her life. She will be greatly missed; however, as she would love to quote “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:8.
Services will be at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle on Saturday, March 21 at 12 pm with Pastor Glen Kuhn officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service.
